The Nine Maidens
Janelle Lucyk, soprano
Kerry Bursey, ténor et luth
Join us for songs of travel and adventure. Weaving together traditional songs with other lively early music, we hear of heroines and heroes who cleverly escape danger and flee to the comfort of love. Singer and violinist Janelle Lucyk's “incandescent presence” (Claude Deschenes) is paired with the "dreamy troubadouresque" (Ôlyrix) lutenist and tenor Kerry Bursey. Through voices, plucked strings, and some violin, the duo performs old music in an intimate manner, with ayres and ballads recounting the transience of good fortune in the life of a voyager. Music by Purcell, Dowland, Monteverdi, and Machaut alongside a gorgeous selection of folk songs.
For a sample of Janelle and Kerry's performances, check out the video links in the comments section:
Lass of London City (traditional)
J'ai planté un chêne (traditional)
Can she excuse my wrongs (Dowland)
Si dolce è'l tormento (Monteverdi)
